The BNB Beacon Chain, the Binance blockchain ecosystem, is expected to undergo a scheduled hard fork upgrade on 19th July at 6:00 UTC, with enhanced security features for users. The hard fork dubbed “ZhangHeng” will occur at block height 328,088,888 and no new tokens will be issued. Full node operators must upgrade their software version to v0.10.16 before reaching the block height in order for their nodes to sync with upgraded validator nodes.
Enhanced Security Features
The upgrade primarily focuses on improving overall security through introducing two major changes: BEP-255 and addressing the Rogue Key Attack vulnerability through removing all existing vote addresses when the height of the hard fork is reached. BEP-255 proposes on-chain asset reconciliation that tracks user balance changes in each block and reconciles them to identify any issues; if there are any errors detected then it will ‘panic’ and prevent production of new blocks until resolved. As for Rogue Key Attack vulnerability, it could potentially jeopardize correctness of Fast Finality mechanism of network; by removing all existing vote addresses when the height of the hardfork is reached it can help prevent this attack from occurring in future blocks or transactions.
